Check out our answers and perspective below!
Who will be moving with you?
It may seem like a silly question but it is important to remember to everyone who will be moving with you. This may apply to spouses, partners, children, siblings, parents, relatives, or even friends who may be interested in making the move as well. When contemplating a move to another country, it is crucial to consider not only your individual needs and preferences but also those of the individuals who will be accompanying you. Acknowledging their aspirations, concerns, and well-being is vital for a successful and fulfilling transition.
What will you need for a successful move?
There are many layers and elements to consider when moving in general, but that is multiplied considerably when moving to another country. However, you don’t want all of these elements to paralyze you from making the move or taking steps forward. You need to prioritize what are the most important aspects for you to have a successful transition and that differs for everyone. Take the time to be introspective along with using input from all the involved parties, decide what you need.
When would you like to move? How long do you plan to be away?
Timing is crucial for a successful transition as well. Many factors should be considered in determining the ideal time for your move: job opportunities, economic conditions, health status and care, educational opportunities for children, political climates, weather conditions, language and cultural awareness, and personal readiness just to name a few.
Where will you live?
Some may start with where and while this is arguably the most important question as well as sometimes to strongest motivation, there are many ways to get to the answer. Think about what you must have and what you can compromise on, and research what countries offer what you’re looking for. Look for others who have experience in places that interest you, but also be open to hearing about the experiences in places you didn’t previously consider. While your move doesn’t have to be permanent, remember that every move has a cost and some costs are higher than others.
Why do you want to move overseas?
The quintessential question: why? The answer to this question is probably the most important of the bunch. Your why is what will push you forward and help you overcome the inevitable obstacles and challenges you will face in a move to another country. Coming to an answer should take some meaningful soul searching and should not be rushed. While some people are able to be successful with a spontaneous move, it will be less stressful to have a strong motivation in place before making such a decision.
